Katrien Van Der Schueren - Where Sculpture Meets Light A New Collection

2026-04-14

Artist Katrien Van Der Schueren unveils a new lighting collection that extends her sculptural practice into illumination, where light becomes both material and medium. Conceived as functional sculptures, each piece is hand-formed in concrete without molds, a labor-intensive process that ensures no two works are ever identical. Guided by touch and intuition, subtle variations give rise to singular forms with a distinctly one-of-a-kind presence.

Finished with a cold-applied liquid metal surface, the works carry the depth and tactile quality of metal while allowing for the fluid, organic movement that defines her practice and positions her as a sculptor whose work brings light into the world.

An Intimate Reflection of an Embrace

The Embrace series is defined by an intimate interplay between strength and softness. Conceived as sculptural lighting, each piece shapes and holds light in an organic way, bending and softening it as it moves into the space, much like how a hug or a loving touch brings warmth to even the darkest corners of our soul. The standing floor lamp embodies this duality most distinctly, acting as both a guardian and a warm embrace, with a striking, protective presence.

A gentle fold reveals a concealed source of light, where light and form meet in a quiet gesture that echoes the intimacy of an embrace. The resulting glow is soft, enveloping, and dimensional, bringing a sense of warmth and presence to the room.

An Ode to the Sea

Like the gentle and lulling rhythm of the sea, the Endless Summer series translates the softness of draped fabric into a fluid, sculptural form, reflecting the natural movement of a wave. The collection carries the depth and luminosity of real metal while retaining a sense of movement and lightness. As illumination passes across its contours, it creates a shifting interplay of shadow and glow, where light moves in and out like the changing of the tide, pulling in your focus, and drawing it back out. Durable and non-cracking, the sconce is suitable for both interior and exterior applications, offering a sculptural presence that evolves with its environment.

Quiet Motion, Sculptural Presence

Inspired by the shifting rhythms of tide and coral, the Glow Pendant carries light through layered, organic waves. Each hand-shaped form opens as if gently designed by water, allowing a soft, diffused glow to move through its contours like the rushing sea. Designed for tall vertical spaces, it introduces a sense of lift and suspension, where light appears to hover and flow simultaneously, drawing your gaze up as if you're gazing above from the ocean floor. Delicate yet full in presence, its cascading structure translates the quiet motion of the ocean into sculptural illumination. As a statement piece, it allows light to travel, pool, and shimmer, creating a vertical field of warmth and calm that subtly transforms its surroundings.

The Glow Sconce offers a more intimate expression of the collection's language. Each piece is shaped by hand, resulting in subtle variations that make every work unique. Crafted from a blend of plaster and resin and finished with delicate layers of liquid metal, the surface responds sensitively to light, revealing delicate shifts in texture and tone. Softly luminous, the sconce brings a sculptural presence to the wall, where light and material unfold in a restrained, atmospheric composition.

Together, the collections reflect Katrien Van Der Schueren's approach to light as a natural extension of her sculptural practice, where material, form, and illumination are inseparable. Each piece exists as a singular work, yet contributes to a broader language of warmth, movement, and atmosphere. Positioned between art and design, the collection invites a more intimate experience of light, one that is felt as much as it is seen.

About Katrien Van Der Schueren

Katrien Van Der Schueren is a self thaught Belgian-born sculptural artist based in Los Angeles. She combines a deep respect for artistic tradition with a distinctly contemporary voice. Her practice is rooted in curiosity and discovery, with cultural encounters and landscapes continually inspiring new ways of seeing, understanding, and shaping.

Material experimentation lies at the heart of her process. Van Der Schueren treats wood, stone, clay, metal, resin, and composite media as collaborators, coaxing them into surprising transformations. Each piece reflects refined technical mastery while retaining an element of the unexpected-feminine, powerful, and quietly subversive. Raw but poetic. Sought after for her ability to transform architectural and spatial environments, Van Der Schueren's works transcend the boundaries of sculpture, design, and installation.
